From your current programmer…. Weston… one of the owners here at BWCF… used to be kinda fit, definitely kinda/mostly not now ;)
Since I’ve been MIA the last few months with a new project (I promise I’ll get back as soon as I can) I wanted to give a bit of an explanation to this cycle. Quint and I have programmed every cycle since opening in 2016 and after so many years of writing workouts it gets tough to stay creative, fun, and fresh. I came up with this cycle because I really wanted to find a way for people to stop confining themselves in the LF/FW/RX boxes. A lot of times people can’t RX an entire workout so they will scale everything… my recommendation is push the movements you can, scale what you must, and keep striving for something out of reach. There is a flip side to RX’ing every single workout as well. If you don’t get the desired stimulus just to get some red letters by your name, your improvement will be much slower and you will be more prone to getting injured. Let’s start focusing on getting the desired stimulus based on our current fitness and skill level.
I know this is a bit unorthodox for us, and sometimes change like this is hard so we decided to only put 2-3 workouts a week like this as an experiment for this cycle. We hope that athletes will look closer at the workout, idealize how they will flow through it and what challenges they will face, study the RX guidelines, and then look inside at what their strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities are to find the correct combination to meet the days stimulus and goals. The beauty of this is that if you don’t know where to start, you have a coach to go to for recommendations. This will make us as coaches be more in tune with all of our athletes and learn more about eachother….. and trust me, the programmer of it all will hear every mistake that is made along the way. I’m willing to make these mistakes if it means we will grow together over the next 5 weeks and come out on the back side better because of our struggles together.
After week one, I think the biggest improvement from my side would be better communication to athletes of why we are doing this and what you are supposed to get out of it as well as making sure all of our coaches are on the same page with the intention of this cycle. Moving forward, you will now see the goal for every workout and stimulus you are after. Coaches are fully briefed with the weeks notes and responsible for asking questions when the program isn’t clear. If you notice we are providing different information, let us know so we can figure out how to improve our communication as coaches moving forward.
We come to BWCF because we want to be physically and mentally healthy, have fun, and create meaningful relationships. If we don’t all provide that for the community (owners, coaches, and members all have a responsibility here), BWCF loses its magic and we all suffer. I thought, what better way to get everyone involved than to switch the roles a bit and create more communication and understanding between athletes, coaches, and programmers?
I have already realized a lot of ways I can improve as a programmer and leader just through the first week of mistakes. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me at any time to discuss (210.478.8981).
Remember… if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
Much Love -Westy-
